I have several New Year’s Resolutions:

I will try not to cheat calling Bingo anymore.  When I take groups of either adults with disabilities or children with disabilities on bus trips, a favorite game to play on the bus is Bingo.  While riding on the bus, I often drop a Bingo ball or two and I do not bother to pick it up, (I easily get motion sickness.)  So,  I will call the games missing that number but not tell anyone.  I figure everyone has the same odds of having that number on their card, so it is equally fair for all of them.  To avoid this problem in the future, I am going to get Bingo cards, (like playing cards,) which many nursing homes use.  I will try not to drop any cards….

I will try to keep my house cleaner.  My house is generally “picked up”, but I wouldn’t call it clean.  There are sometimes little cobwebs in the corners of the ceiling and little mouse droppings on the floor.  (Ha!  Ha! That part isn’t true…just wanted to see if you were paying attention.)

I will try to watch more educational shows and less reality shows, (however I get to keep Survivor and Amazing Race.) Although, I  must say, that watching some reality shows makes me think my family is “normal”.

According to my son, Angel, I need to stop trying to fit my large, large van into tiny, tiny spots. It looks kind of funny when we have to all crawl out the back door, (because we are so close to the next car we cannot open the doors.)  We have to  jump to the ground because it is so high. Looks like the joke car where the clowns keep coming and coming and coming…       Ah….I guess I’ll try to give up such fun for the upcoming year…

My children and I will eat more vegetables.  I saw a book about hiding vegetables in other food items, such as spaghetti sauce. I wonder, however, how much spinach you can actually hide in there before it turns green?

I would love to do more public speaking this year.  I spoke at several regional and state conferences last year and I loved it! If you are a parent, you know that you love to talk about your children and have people listen. Public speaking multiplies that 100 fold. (I do have to a speak from behind a podium, however, because I have to cross my legs when I laugh so I don’t pee. And I laugh quite a bit!)

Although I CAN cook, I don’t because my  husband loves to.  I once made tuna noodle casserole and my children couldn’t believe it because they had never seen me cook.  I vow to cook at least one vegetable laden meal a week when my husband is working late.  No more take-out pizza for us!

My annual resolution, which has worked well for me, is to love and support my family unconditionally, and to be kind and caring to others.

Happy New Year everyone!  May your life be filled with as much happiness as mine!

  1. Your family is more than normal. About hiding veg in other foods; try mashing them with potato. Cauliflower in potato is a favorite of our grand children.

  2. I put carrot sticks in my spagetti sauce. Sautee them with the onions and green peppers before you brown the meat. Yum, yum and they don’t notice it at all.

  3. Spaghetti sauce is a vegetable! We sometimes had trees with cheese sauce (broccoli). they would eat trees. I think you have to start young with that spin.

  4. Stay At Home Dad said:

I have to hide the veggies so that my wife will eat them…… LOL

  5. Happy New Year! Eat more cookies!

  6. These are great resolutions. You could try grating the veges – like carrots and zucchinni into the spagetti sauce. They almost dissolve and are indistinguishable – trust me. My Mum used this trick for YEARS.

    • Ahhhh! The trick is to make them tiny tiny tiny!

      • Yep. You dont even notice them. Another good one is macaroni cheese with cauliflower. Cut up fairly fine, cook in pot with pasta for last few minutes of cooking and you’re done. Another vege in the mix!!

      • Great idea! Macaroni and cheese is a favorite.

      • I have a new trick, I use a green powder which has all the servings of fruit and veg for one day (the nutrition of) you can mix it with juice or water, has a pleasant orange flavor. I also make smoothies with spinach, yogurt and tons of frozen berries. The spinach is really not noticeable. My kids like the green drink, my grandson calls it “shreck juice” lol

      • Shrek juice is funny. I often do make smoothies with fruit, but I doubt they would drink a green smoothie….well, maybe my son who is blind and couldn’t seen the “greeness!”

  7. PS – I like the new format of the blog. Bright and cheerful :)

  8. I thought everybody’s house had mouse poop in it. Great post.

  9. I love the large, large van in tiny spots. Kudos to you for being able to get it into them. The real news year resolution should be societal, to provide better parking for people who need the large, large van to help their family participate fully in society and live a normal life. As for cobwebs, make ever dinner a candlelight one and you will never see them :-)

  10. Good luck on the resolutions ~ I have succeeded in some and failed in others, but then so is life! Keeping a cleaner house is the one I always fail at, although the first few weeks of the new year it is always spotless!! New Year blessings!

  11. I’m sure you have a lot to share with others! I’ll be speaking more this year, too. If you need a prayer partner when you speak, email me. It would be my privilege to do so!

  12. Good luck on all your resolutions… Great story! Thanks for sharing…

  13. Great resolutions! I use fresh spinach in my spaghetti sauce and my chicken n’ dumplings. It shows up in the soup, but I told the family it was parsley and because I chopped it small they believed. ;-)

  14. I love you annual resoultion the best of all. May 2013 be your best year yet!

    Blessings!

  15. I wanted you to know that I have nominated you for the Very Inspiring Blogger Award. http://ichosetolive.wordpress.com/2013/01/02/very-inspiring-blogger-award-nomination/The link will lead you to the guidelines if you would like to participate. Thanks for being a great inspiration, not only to me, but to many people that visit this blog. God Bless you and your family.

  16. It’s only cheating if it’s for your own personal gain, I wouldn’t worry too much about it!

  17. Good luck with your resolutions!

  18. Linda, you obviously have come across one of the great secrets in life: what happens to us is not as important as the choices we make in response to those circumstances.

  19. In terms of the bingo, that’s not really cheating unless you are dropping the balls intentionally. I think a good lawyer could get you off.

  20. Blend the veggies! Blend all the left over/getting-slightly-old veggies in your fridge together with some ground beef and chickpeas along with seasoning. The whole thing tastes like the beef, and it makes the beef go so much farther – a great way to get more meals out of your budget, as meat is usually the most expensive item.

  21. QuotesYou said:

Happy New Year and all the best with ur resolutions :-D

  22. I love the new look of your blog. Terrific! I love your resolutions. More vegetables, bigger parking spaces – words to live by. Happy New Year!

  23. LOL Loved the bingo promise :)

Being a former hardcore codependent I will add to the 2013 resolutions:

“My annual resolution is to love and support myself unconditionally, and to be kind and caring to myself”. ;-)

  24. Great resolutions … wonderful post! I admit when I read the mouse-droppings, my eyes widened and I gasped! lol.

  25. Make sure you give yourself some slack! Every now and then, order a veggie pizza and call it a day… :)

  26. Very entertaining – and there are some great goals in here. You should see the cowebs around here. I gave up and started naming the spiders in the corners. Hard to clean them up when they are pets . . .

I put spinach in my kids morning smoothies . . . shhhhhhhh. They do not know.

Does the biggest loser count as educational? My 7 and 9 year old love to watch it with me.

  27. I agree with Jen, you can make a pizza very vegetable-y or make it Hawaiian with pineapple. Loved the mouse bit, I did have a mouse Christmas a few years ago. I knew because the dogs started barking at the hutch and cabinets seemingly out of the blue. The Christmas mouse stayed in the guest room with the shiny wrapping paper on which he dined. I know this because I found shiny pellets all over the house.

  28. Nice blog! Good luck with your resolutions :-)

  29. Well, I got lots of ideas about how to put more veges into the diet, thanks. But I want to know If you don’t cook than who does?

    • My husband, who was the cook in a restaurant when I was a waitress 100 years ago, has always enjoyed cooking and he does it all. I certainly can cook, I’m just our of practice.

  31. I wanted to let you know I nominated you for a “Liebster Blog Award”. It’s mainly an opportunity to network with other bloggers that may not have seen your blog and put forward blogs that you like and find new blogs to enjoy. It does take some time and I completely understand if you decide you don’t want to do this. But I enjoy your blog and think others will, too. If you decide to do this, here is a shortlink http://shoefulofdrool.com/. I look forward to seeing you!

  32. Chop up spinach fine and it looks just like parsley or basil…You can put A LOT in spaghetti sauce that way. Love your stories of Angel!

  33. I can’t believe you cheated at Bingo! ;-). From your posts, I can’t imagine you doing any more for your family than you do already. :-)

  34. I’m exhausted reading your list. I was going to read another blog but the “I Cheated At Bingo” Post caught my eye.
